Green Streets Initiative Third Annual Best Shoveled Block Contest in Full Swing
Location
Green Streets Initiative (GSI), a Cambridge-based nonprofit, celebrated the launch of its third annual Best Shoveled Block contest Friday, December 30. The contest, currently in full swing, is a community extension of GSI’s mission to promote the use of sustainable, active transportation.
The contest is made possible in partnership with the Cambridge Post Office and is designed to make winter walking and cycling safer through the thorough removal of ice and snow from sidewalks. The contest is judged by local letter carriers, who use sidewalks daily in the course of delivering mail. Winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on April 27, 2012, when they will also be rewarded with a party to celebrate their efforts.
"Our local streets are what really bring the community together,” said Janie Katz-Christy, GSI’s Founding Director. “A well-shoveled sidewalk not only improves a commute, but it’s great for the neighborhood and local businesses by encouraging foot traffic."
Nominations for the Best Shoveled Block are due March 30, 2012 and can be submitted to the Cambridge Post Office in several ways:
