Participating Organizations

Boston

Home to the oldest subway in North America, Boston has deep roots in active, sustainable transportation.  Nicknamed "The Walking City," Boston hosts more pedestrian commuters than do other comparably populated cities.  Boston is also making strides to join the ranks of other world class biking cities thanks in part by efforts from Mayor Menino and his "Car is no longer king" policy.  A number of allied organizations to Green Streets have also been implemental in improving the streets for cyclists: Bikes not Bombs, Boston Cyclist Union, Livable Streets, CommonWheels Bike Co-Op.

As nearly a third of people who work in Boston commute by public transit, many companies were eager to join our inaugural Walk Ride Day Corporate Challenge.  These competing organizations include The Community Builders, Inc., Unitarian Universalists, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Northeastern, and Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

You can receive rewards and discounts on Walk/Ride Day by visiting our retail partners. See who is participating in Boston.

Many Boston Public Schools are active participants of Walk/Ride Day.  Thanks to dedicated teachers, parents and students, Walk/Ride Day is celebrated monthly in the following schools: Russell & Homes, Rogers Middle School, Henderson Elementary, Curley School, Roosevelt School, Madison Park High School, Michael J. Perkins, The Mather, Adams Elementary School, Josiah Quincy Elementary School, Boston Technical Elementary, Mason Pilot School.

Boston's Walk/Ride Day work is being coordinated by Melissa Santley. Melissa is completing her Masters in Urban Environmental Leadership at Lesley University this spring and she a committed multi-modal transportation advocate and has experience building social capital on issues concerning road safety and accessibility.  She has really enjoyed joining Walk Ride Day celebrations at participating Boston Schools and creating momentum amongst companies for the Walk Ride Day Corporate Challenge.  Aside from promoting Green Streets, you can find Melissa either running or biking through the Emerald Necklace, which happens to be the enduring creation of her revered environmental role model, Frederick Law Olmsted.

You can learn more about her work and activities in the Boston area by contacting her.
