Cambridge
All About Cambridge
In Self magazine's annual rankings of "America's Best Cities for Women," Cambridge emerged as the "Healthiest Overall City," boasting a population that, compared to other cities, walks to work "80 percent more".
That statistic speaks to why Cambridge is so proud to be the home of the Green Streets Initiative. In addition to long-standing partnerships with the Cambridge Public Health Department's division of Community Health & Wellness and the Mayor's office, the city recently funded a Cambridge Walk/Ride Day coordinator.
Many Cambridge organizations are participating in our Walk/Ride Day Corporate Challenge, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Pfizer. Millennium Pharmaceuticals, another Cambridge participant, is a historical partner and supporter of the Green Streets Initiative, lighting the path to internal employee Walk/Ride Day programs and funding Walk/Ride Day programs in Cambridge schools.

These school programs are coordinated by many people who have donated time and energy to promoting our mission among Cambridge K-12 students: Parents, classroom and physical education teachers, librarians and students - of all ages - themselves. Since the launch of these programs, there has been an increase in active, sustainable transportation methods among participating classrooms from 10% to over 80%. These choices are celebrated with lobby music and after-school parties, Walk/Ride Day logo handstamps and police-escorted bike rides to school.
You can receive rewards and discounts on Walk/Ride Day by visiting our Cambridge retail partners.
Meet our Cambridge Coordinator
In November, the Green Streets Initiative welcomed events and communications consultant Amanda Zantal-Wiener as Cambridge Walk/Ride Day Coordinator. Amanda has shared her dreams and visions for Walk/Ride Day in Cambridge through new outreach plans and Green Drinks events throughout the city.
Fun fact: Amanda used to sing with a punk band, a chamber choir and a jazz ensemble, so please feel free to contact her with your ideas, questions, or tunes about Cambridge at amanda@amandazw.com.
